Getting started

What is Refyn?

Refyn is a learning platform for schools, built around the IB MYP. Students get an AI tutor that helps them think instead of handing out answers, notes and practice for every subject, simulations and a focus room. Teachers get classes, assignments, AI-assisted marking, planning tools and a clear view of who needs help.

How do I sign in?

Choose Log in and use your email, or the student ID on your card if your school gave you one (it starts MIS-). Student ID accounts sign in with a password, not Google.

How do I get Refyn for my school or class?

Choose Get started to request access for yourself, a class or a whole school. Refyn has paid plans for students, teachers and schools, and you'll see the options there.

Can I try Refyn without an account?

Yes. The live demo runs the real portal on sample data in your browser, as a student or a teacher, with a guided tour. Nothing you do is saved.

How do I find things quickly?

Press Ctrl K (⌘K on a Mac) on any page, or click the search box at the top of the sidebar. Type a topic, simulation, tool or page and press Enter. It does quick sums too.

Can I switch between light and dark?

Yes. Use the sun and moon button at the bottom of the sidebar. Refyn remembers your choice on that device.

Does Refyn work on phones and tablets?

Yes. Refyn works in any modern browser and every page adapts to small screens. On a phone, the menu button sits at the bottom right.

The AI tutor

Will Refyn just give me the answer?

Not in guided mode, which is on by default. Ask for an answer and Refyn breaks the problem into steps, asks what you'd do next and checks your working, so you can do it yourself next time.

Can I get a straight explanation instead?

Yes. Switch Guided off under the message box, or type /direct, and Refyn explains things clearly and directly. Switch it back on, or type /guided, whenever you like.

What is “My Refyn” in the assistant?

When My Refyn is on, the tutor can see your classes, deadlines and grades, so questions like “what should I do first?” get answers about your real week. Turn it off to keep a chat general.

Who can see my chats with the AI tutor?

You can, and so can the teachers of your classes and Refyn administrators, who can review how AI is used to keep it safe and helpful. Other students can't see your chats.

Can I tell the tutor which subject I'm working on?

Yes. Pick the subject from the menu under the message box, so explanations use the right terms and examples.

Can I ask about a photo or a file?

Yes. Use the paperclip to attach a photo, PDF or document, then ask your question about it.

Can the AI make mistakes?

Yes. AI can get things wrong, so double-check important facts and working, especially for assessed work. Your teacher's feedback always comes first.

Studying

How do I choose my subjects?

Open My Subjects and press Change subjects. Tick the ones you study and the rest stay out of the way.

What is Teach Echo?

A way to learn by teaching. Echo is a curious robot that only knows what you tell it. Pick a topic, explain it in your own words and answer Echo's questions. Then Echo sits a short quiz using only what you taught, so the questions it gets wrong show exactly which ideas you left out or mixed up, and your report says what to teach better. As Echo learns it levels up and evolves through four forms (Spark, Glow, Scholar and Professor), you win a sticker for each subject you teach well, and topics slowly fade from Echo's memory after a week, so teaching them again refreshes them for both of you. You can also explain out loud with the microphone button.

How should I study a topic?

Open a subject, pick a topic and work through its steps: learn, worked example, key terms, quick check and exam practice. Each step ticks off as you finish it.

How do flashcards work?

Flip a card, then rate yourself honestly. Cards you're still learning keep coming back, and Still learning only lets you review just those.

How do I make a practice exam?

In a subject, open Exam builder. Pick topics, how many questions and a time limit, then start. It's marked when you submit, and anything you got wrong goes into your mistakes log.

What is “Your world” on my Overview?

A floating island where each building is one of your subjects, built up as far as you've mastered it. Practise to add floors; your streak adds fireflies. Click a building to open that subject.

How does my streak work?

Any day you practise, read a topic or finish a focus session counts. Keep going on consecutive days to grow your streak.

What are learning paths?

Step-by-step routes through a topic, with lessons, quizzes and a capstone at the end. Pick one up in Learning Paths, or have Refyn build one with you.

How do the simulations work?

Open Simulations, pick one and change the controls, like angle, speed or temperature, and watch what happens. Each one has challenges, a data tab and a short explanation.

What is the focus room?

A timer with calm scenes and sounds for revision. Pick a length, choose a soundscape and press start. Finished sessions count towards your streak.

What is the Brain?

A map of everything you've studied, asked and made, linked by idea. Click a star to see what it connects to.

Classes and assignments

How do I join a class?

Open Classes, type the six-character code from your teacher into Join a class and press Join.

Where do I see what's due?

Your Overview shows what's due this week, and each card on Classes shows that class's next deadline. Reminders also appear under the bell at the top of the sidebar.

How do I hand in an assignment?

Open the assignment and press Hand in. Write your answer or attach a file, then send it. You can resubmit until your teacher marks it.

Where is my teacher's feedback?

Open Grades. Each marked piece shows your mark, your teacher's comments and your next step, grouped by subject.

How do I see my progress?

Progress shows your level on each MYP criterion over time, so you can see which skill to work on next.

How do I message my teacher?

Open Messages, pick your teacher and type. A badge shows when they reply.

How do I build a portfolio?

Open Portfolio and press New project. Add your process, reflections and media, then share a link when you're ready.

Can I get feedback before I hand in?

Yes. Assessment coach reads your draft and adds notes on your own document, strand by strand against the MYP criteria. Your teacher still does the marking.

What is Future Self?

Pick a career and Refyn builds a three-year roadmap from your subjects and marks, including what to do this month.

Teaching

How do I create a class?

Open Classes and press Create class. Add a name and subject, then share the six-character join code; students join themselves.

How do I set an assignment?

Open a class, go to Assignments and press Set a task. Add instructions, the task itself, resources, a due date and how it's marked, including MYP criteria with your own clarifications.

How does AI-drafted feedback work?

Open Marking, pick a submission and choose a tone. Refyn drafts feedback and a suggested mark from the student's own work. Edit it, set the mark and return it; nothing reaches the student until you do.

Are there keyboard shortcuts for marking?

Yes. J and K (or the arrow keys) move between students, F jumps to the feedback box, Alt+1 to 9 inserts a saved comment and Ctrl+Enter returns the work. Press ? to see them all.

Can Refyn mark a whole class set?

Yes. Marking copilot takes a stack of PDF or Word files and pre-marks each one against the MYP criteria and your clarifications. You moderate, approve and send.

Where is the gradebook?

Gradebook shows every student and every piece of work in one grid, with averages, hand-in rates and missing work. Export it to CSV whenever you need to.

How do I see who needs help?

On your Overview, the Class galaxy colours every student by how they're doing, and Students to check on lists missing work, falling marks and quiet spells, with the reason. At-risk radar looks across all your classes.

Can Refyn plan my lessons?

Yes. Describe the unit in Planner and Refyn drafts a full plan with objectives, lessons, activities and checks, which you can edit and save.

Does the assistant give teachers complete answers?

Yes. For teachers, Refyn works in teacher mode and writes complete materials, answers included: exit tickets, rubrics, worked solutions and more.

Can Refyn differentiate a lesson?

Yes. In Differentiate, choose a class and a topic, and Refyn writes support, core and stretch versions for each student from their marks.

Can Refyn help with notes to parents?

Yes. Parent briefs drafts a short note for each family: one win, one thing to grow and one way to help at home. Nothing is sent from Refyn; you copy or email it after checking.

Can Refyn make slides?

Yes. In Presentations, describe the lesson and get designed slides with images and speaker notes. Edit them in Refyn or export to PowerPoint or PDF.

Can I make printable worksheets and tests?

Schools with Refyn Studio have Create printables: choose a worksheet, test, exit ticket or flashcards, describe the topic and get a titled, timed and marked page, ready to print.

How do I make a diagram?

In Refyn Studio's Diagram lab, start from a template, like a lens ray diagram or a free-body diagram, or describe one, and Refyn draws it accurately, ready to add to a worksheet.

Can I use our school's past papers?

Yes. Add past papers and mark schemes in Past papers, and Refyn cites them when it writes tests, revision and practice.

Is there a class timer?

Yes. Class timer is a full-screen countdown with calm visuals for silent work, tests or tidy-up time.

Can I see how my students use AI?

Yes. AI usage shows each student's requests and usage this month, with quotas you can adjust.

Plans, accounts and safety

How much does Refyn cost?

Refyn has paid plans for individual students, for teachers and for whole schools. Choose Get started to see the plans and request access.

Is there a limit on AI use?

Each plan includes a monthly AI allowance, shown at the top of the assistant. Schools can set their own limits too.

Can schools control how AI is used?

Yes. School admins set AI rules for their school, such as blocked topics and usage limits, and teachers can see how their students use AI.

Can I sign in with Google?

If your account uses a school email, you can link it to Google from your Overview and use Google to sign in after that. Student ID accounts don't use Google.
