IB MYP AI tutor

The AI tutor built for IB MYP students

Refyn is an AI tutor and learning platform designed around the IB Middle Years Programme. It helps students aged 11 to 16 think their way to an answer instead of copying one, and it gives teachers a clear view of how AI is being used in every class.

  • Guided mode: hints and questions, not answers
  • Feedback against the MYP criteria
  • Notes, practice and exam questions for every subject
  • Teachers see how AI is used

Why MYP students need a different kind of AI tutor

General chatbots are built to answer questions as fast as possible. That is useful for adults and risky for a 13-year-old with a science report due tomorrow: paste in the task, copy out the answer, learn nothing, and break the school's academic integrity policy along the way.

The MYP asks students to investigate, explain, evaluate and reflect. Those skills are assessed against published criteria in every subject, and they only grow when the student does the thinking. An AI tutor for the MYP has to protect that thinking, not replace it.

Refyn was built for exactly that job. It knows the MYP subject groups, uses MYP command terms and criteria, and is designed so the student, not the AI, produces the work they hand in.

Guided mode: hints, questions and checks instead of answers

Guided mode is on by default. When a student asks Refyn to solve something, it breaks the problem into steps, asks what they would do next and checks their working, so they can do it themselves next time.

Students can switch to a direct explanation when they genuinely need one, by turning Guided off or typing /direct, and switch back with /guided. Schools decide how much freedom students have: admins can block topics and set AI usage limits, and every plan includes a monthly AI allowance.

  • Asks the next question instead of giving the final answer
  • Checks each step of the student's working
  • Uses the right subject terms when the student picks their subject
  • Reads photos, PDFs and documents the student attaches
  • Can see the student's classes, deadlines and grades when My Refyn is on, so “what should I do first?” gets a real answer

Feedback built around the MYP criteria

In the MYP, each subject is assessed against four criteria, A to D, with level descriptors that tell students what good work looks like. Refyn's Assessment coach reads a student's draft and adds notes on their own document, strand by strand against those criteria, before they hand it in. Their teacher still does the marking.

Progress tracking follows the same structure: students see their level on each criterion over time, so they know which skill to work on next instead of chasing a single overall grade.

Notes, practice and exam questions for every subject

Beyond the tutor, Refyn has built-in study content for MYP Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Extended Mathematics, English Language and Literature, History, and Individuals and Societies. Each topic is a set of steps: learn, a worked example, key terms, a quick check and exam-style practice.

Students can build timed practice exams, review a mistakes log, use spaced-repetition flashcards and daily review, run interactive science simulations, and revise in a focus room with a timer and calm soundscapes.

Teach Echo: proving understanding by teaching it

The fastest way to find out whether you understand something is to explain it. Teach Echo turns that into a game: Echo is a curious AI robot that only knows what the student tells it. The student explains a topic and answers Echo's questions, then Echo sits a short quiz using only what it was taught.

Every answer Echo gets wrong points to a gap in the student's explanation, which makes it a revision tool that can't be gamed by copying.

How learning by teaching works with Teach Echo

Built for teachers and schools, not just students

Teachers can see how their students use AI, including each student's requests and usage this month, with quotas they can adjust. Students know this: their chats are visible to their class teachers and to Refyn administrators, and never to other students.

On the teaching side, Refyn drafts feedback and suggested marks from each student's own work for the teacher to edit and return, pre-marks a whole class set against the MYP criteria with the teacher's clarifications, plans units, differentiates lessons from students' marks and builds slides. Nothing reaches a student until the teacher sends it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an AI tutor made specifically for IB MYP?

Yes. Refyn is built around the IB Middle Years Programme: its tutor uses MYP subject terms and command terms, its feedback follows the MYP criteria A to D, and it includes study content for seven MYP subjects.

Will the AI just give my child the answers?

Not in guided mode, which is on by default. Refyn breaks problems into steps, asks what the student would do next and checks their working. A direct explanation is available when it's genuinely needed, and schools can set limits.

Is using an AI tutor allowed under IB academic integrity rules?

Using AI to learn is different from submitting AI-written work. Refyn is designed for learning: guided mode holds back answers, Assessment coach comments on the student's own draft rather than rewriting it, and teachers can see how AI is used. Always follow your school's own AI policy.

Which MYP subjects does Refyn cover?

The tutor helps with any subject. Built-in notes, practice and exam questions cover Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Extended Mathematics, English Language and Literature, History, and Individuals and Societies.

Can teachers see what students ask the AI?

Yes. Teachers of a student's classes and Refyn administrators can see that student's AI chats, and the AI usage page shows each student's requests and usage. Other students can't see anyone's chats.

Does Refyn help teachers too?

Yes. It drafts feedback and marks for teachers to edit, pre-marks class sets against the MYP criteria, plans units, differentiates lessons, writes parent briefs and builds slides. Teachers stay in control of everything students receive.

How much does Refyn cost?

Refyn has paid plans for individual students, for teachers and for whole schools. Choose Get started to see the plans and request access.

Can I try Refyn without signing up?

Yes. The live demo runs the real portal on sample data in your browser, as a student or a teacher, with a guided tour. Nothing you do is saved.
